Hyde Park United Methodist welcomes familiar face as new pastor

On Sunday, Hyde Park United Methodist Church will welcome a new but familiar pastor to the pulpit.

In February, the bishop of the Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church appointed the Rev. Magrey deVega, who served as associate pastor at Hyde Park from 2000 to 2007, to return as senior pastor.

DeVega, 42, fills the position left by the beloved Jim Harnish.

I spoke to deVega about his time away from Tampa and his homecoming.

Can you tell me about your background and beginnings in the Methodist church?

I was born in Fort Lauderdale. When I was really young my family moved to St. Petersburg. I went to high school there. I went to seminary in Ohio and then returned to Florida to serve at a church in Tallahassee. From 2000 to 2007 I was associate pastor at Hyde Park. Those years had a profound effect on me and my understanding of ministry.

You then went to pastor a small church in Iowa? How was it different?

I was pastor in the rural town of Cherokee, Iowa. There were fewer than 5,000 people in the town. The church was surrounded by cornfields, wide open spaces and rolling hills. There was that quintessential main street. It was a town full of good people. I learned quite a bit there about what it m
