Renee Maria Falconetti, Maria Falconetti, Marie Falconetti, Ren�e Maria Falconetti or Falconetti. Whatever name you know her by once you've seen her you will never forget her. All of a woman's names. Do I have the words to describe her for what words are adequate enough, good enough? How can a few words do justice to this most poetic of actresses? Her performance as Joan of Arc in The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928), her only starring film (there are 2 French film shorts she appeared in about a decade earlier), is the greatest perfomance in the history of cinema. I cannot think of Joan of Arc without seeing a close-up of Falconetti's extraordinary face in my mind's eye. And yet there are so few words on her that I can see. The internet has just the briefest of bios, seemingly one man/woman's words cut and pasted to death. Renée Jeanne Falconetti[1] (21 July 1892 – 12 December 1946), sometimes credited as Maria Falconetti,[2]Marie Falconetti,[3]Renée Maria Falconetti,[4][5] or simply Falconetti, was a French stage and film actress, notable for her acclaimed role as Joan of Arc in Carl Theodor Dreyer's 1928 silent The Passion of Joan of Arc and subsequent mysterious and enigmatic death.[6] There is little recorded information about her life and career on the internet, and much of the existing information about her life is contradictory.[7]
Early life and career
[edit]Born in Pantin, Seine-Saint-Denis, Falconetti grew up poor and was schooled by nuns who did not support her acting ambitions. Despite this, she became a stage actress in Paris by entertaining soldiers during World War I. She made a name for herself in the early 1920s, mainly playing roles in light comedies and musicals.[8]
