Safia Ahmad was born on December 5, 1928. She is almost 90 years old at the time of the interview and full of life and energy. She is dressed beautifully and is very eager to share her story. She was born into a large family in Jodhpur where she spent most of her childhood.
She is a distant cousin of Mr. Sami Ahmad, her husband. She married very young and moved with him to Shimla, where he worked for the British government. In July of 1947, they elected to move to Pakistan together with their families. She had two young children at the time. They traveled by train through Delhi, Jodhpur, passed into Hyderabad, Sindh and then to Karachi, the capital of Pakistan in 1947.
When they arrived in Pakistan, there was a housing shortage so they lived in a tent for almost two years before they were assigned a real house. Her husband worked until his retirement for the Ministry of Commerce in Pakistan. After her children had grown up, Mrs. Ahmad decided to start working on a career outside her home. She joined a school as an administrator and later worked at another school as a principal. For ten years they lived in Chittagong, East Pakistan (which later declared itself independent as Bangladesh in 1971).

Ram Manohar Lohia (pronunciationⓘ 23 March 1910 – 12 October 1967) was an Indian political activist of the Indian independence movement and a socialist politician. As a nationalist, he worked actively to protest against colonialism, raising awareness of the same. He founded multiple socialist political parties and later won elections to the Lok Sabha.
Early life
[edit]Ram Manohar Lohia was born on 23 March 1910 in a MarwariBania family[1][2][3] at Akbarpur in modern-day Uttar Pradesh.[2] In 1912, when he was only two years old, his mother died. He was then raised by his father, Hiralal, who never remarried. In 1918, he moved with his father to Bombay, and then completed his high school education there. After securing the first position in his school at the matriculation examination, he completed his intermediate studies from the Banaras Hindu University in 1927. In 1929, he completed his Bachelor of Arts from the Vidyasagar College, under the University of Calcutta.[4]
