    Richard McClure Scarry(June 5, &#;– April 30, ) was an American children's author and illustrator who published over books with total sales of over million worldwide.

    Early life[]

    Scarry was born in Boston, Massachusetts, where his parents ran a shop. The Scarry family enjoyed a comfortable life even during the time of the Great Depression. Following high school graduation, Scarry enrolled in a business college but soon dropped out, finding it not to his liking. He then studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, where he remained until being drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II. After the war, Scarry worked for the art departments of various magazines before making a career breakthrough in with Little Golden Books.

    In Irish, his surname is pronounced, originating on the west coast of Ireland, but English-speakers often pronounce it "scary", and this is the pronunciation used in popular video and audio renditions of his books and stories.

    As a boy, I knew I was supposed to like cars and trucks and things that go. But as an unathletic and decidedly unboyish kid, I only got close to liking one car—my mom’s blue Volkswagen Ghia, which she used to ferry me to and from school (and, when she needed some time to herself, to her parents’—my grandparents’—house for an overnight visit). In fact, I didn’t just like that car, I loved it, so much so that the day it was towed away I secretly chipped a piece of the sky-colored paint from the chassis and tearfully hid it in a little box. I never had the chance to develop such a special relationship with a truck or a bus or an airplane or anything else with a motor or wheels—in fact, such things scared me, and to this day I have never changed a tire.
