Sandra ONeill, Ph.D.
Background
Sandra O'Neill is a Research Fisheries Biologist with the NOAA's Northwest Fisheries Science Center (NWFSC). Prior to joining NWFSC, Sandra was a Research Scientist with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife where she conducted fish contaminant studies for almost 20 years. She received a Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology from Memorial University of Newfoundland and a Master of Science in Zoology from the University of British Columbia. She has expertise with environmental monitoring and assessment, fish ecology, and evaluating factors affecting contaminant exposure and accumulation in fish. Her work experience also includes habitat management of marine areas of Puget Sound, limnology, and mussel aquaculture.
Current Research
She is providing assistance to the Puget Sound Partnership on the selection of indicators for the condition of Puget Sound and is studying contaminant exposure and effects to marine fish.

On Oct. 16, O’Neill told her story with a group of CSUN students during a presentation in Manzanita Hall. She recounted her journey of becoming an Emmy Award-winning reporter for Telemundo and offered advice to future journalists as part of Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations.
O’Neill graduated from high school in South Gate and attended Long Beach City College, becoming the first in her family to graduate from both.
While attending college, she interned at KWPW radio and worked weekends in promotions and evening shows at Viva She also wrote about entertainment and community events for local free weekly publications.
