    Hi everyone,
I'm always experimenting. The mandolin is number one in my heart, but I am curious about trying out the dobro. Any thoughts? Difficult to play? Wondering how difficult it is to learn to play chords (or, do you play chords?). Decent, inexpensive dobros to buy? Is the tuning the same as the guitar? (I used to play the guitar years ago but frankly, the mando tuning in fifths just makes more sense).

    Just wondering....
    Thanks,
    Jill

Well, I play both, but I think you probably mean bluegrass-style, "horizontal" dobro, whereas I play finger-picking and slide blues on a metal-bodied instrument.

In terms of inexpensive instruments, you may want to check out the current Regals, which are Pac-rim imports (they make both styles of guitar).

I play mandolin and I play with the Dobro. I picked it up 2 years ago when I started having left hand physical problems. I had a Regal not an expensive one. It was ok sounded pretty good for the money. I bought a real '78 Dobro a while back. It sounds better but I'

Peterson tuners are highly accurate, precise and simple to use, you can tune your Reso to perfection if you’ve ever used a tuner of any type before. Peterson counts Jerry Douglas, Jimmy Heffernan, Randy Kohrs, the late Mike Auldridge and other Reso greats among its users, so you’ll be in good company!

The Resophonic Guitar or “Dobro” is an acoustic guitar with one or more metal resonator dishes in its body which amplify the plucked strings. The Dobro is played mostly with the strings elevated from the fretboard and facing up to the player. The strings are not “fretted”, rather they are stopped with the use of a metal tone bar (Stevens Bar).

The Dobro or Reso is commonly tuned to GBDGBD, and Open G chord, but there are many other tunings. Because of the fretless nature of resophonic guitars, it is possible to vastly improve the interval tuning using pure or “half tempered” instead of Equal Tempered tuning.

If you are not familiar with this kind of tuning jargon, relax, because there is one tuner that does it all for you. Because of Peterson tuners unique “Sweetened Tuning” feature, each tuner has a host of tempered presets which you simply choose - the tuner then guides you automatically – just like using an ordinary tuner – but sweeter.
